ABOUT THE ARTIST Active in art leagues in Nevada and California, Pam has served as President of NAA, supporting the arts wherever possible. She participated in South Lake Tahoe’s CeleBEARtion in 2005, painting a full size fiberglass bear with motorcycle gear, leathers, patches and all. Bad Bear now lives in the Tahoe Keys. Another painted bear greets visitors at the Carson City Harley Davidson dealership. Several of her painted chairs helped the Reno Crisis Call Center raise funds during its "Chair-ity" auction. Since retiring from teaching high school art in California, Pam Brekas has thrown herself into art. An art studio was built into her house in Gardnerville, where she creatively attacks life and art. Her abstract style is quite different, has won numerous awards, and has helped her get both a Sierra Arts Foundation 2007 Fellowship and Nevada Arts Council jackpot grant. She actively shows her work in local galleries and shows, and has had solo shows at the Vision Place in Reno “Encouraging the Inner Artist”, and Metro Gallery in Reno “Cosmic Connections”. Pam teaches one day and weekend workshops in Creative Play and Abstract Acrylics through St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City. Her photography (weather shots) can be seen on KTVN weather segments, and well as in the Nevada State Fair, and Carson Valley Photo Club. A Harley rider, she takes countless photos from the back of the motorcycle. ARTIST'S STATMENT Art is a creative game for me. As long as I can remember I was drawing, writing, taking photographs, painting on walls, and just enjoying the freedom of creativity. This enjoyment of the arts has led to a wonderful appreciation of all the arts, and a desire to create work that is one-of-a-kind. The creative force (inner artist) is alive in all of us, but some don’t recognize it or try to box it in. I just want to play, explore, create, teach others to do the same and enjoy the process. The end result is always a surprise, usually one I wasn’t expecting, but one that I enjoy.
My photography tends to be more abstract and close up shots. My paintings are almost always abstract with layers of glazes and fluid acrylics. Images occur when they choose to appear; I don’t try to force the issue. Since I work with linoleum brayers, kitchen spatulas, some brushes, and colored pencils, the mixed media approach works well for me. I use similar techniques with the domino necklaces creating unique pendants.
It’s always fun to own and wear original art, but it should be something you connect with, not merely a piece to own. Art is very personal, and I have found my bliss in the creation.
